Steinbeck Sensation

Steinbeck would have been proud.

He lived for a while in Sag Harbor (there are pictures of him in the library) and loved adventure.

This whole summer has been an adventure for me - but yesterday was the biggest one of all. I had to find a way to get to Sag Harbor (15 miles away from where I live in South Hampton)in order to meet the two children I am going to nanny this summer. I was all set to take a bus in the evening (however unreliable they are)but Alex and one of his coworkers at Madam Tongs were making a run there so I hitched a ride.

5 hours before I had to be at my nannying job :~/

I had a book and camera with me and right away I took to exploring the town. I discovered hidden treasures all over the place - lots of color, foliage and flowers.

I had dinner at a nice restaurant, where the chef actually came out and asked me how my dinner was.

I visited the bookstore, and was mistaken by a little boy for being an employee there. I told him that he should read Harry Potter and he said he wanted the newest book.

Later that evening, I made my way to 254 Madison, the summer home of my little ones that I am nannying. William and Kate are charming, smart and very spoiled ;) Both parents are architects, and besides giving their children toys and nano ipods, they teach them the value of exercise and a love for the outdoors. I felt like I was talking with two people who were much older than 7 and 9. I couldn't ask for kids at a better stage in life. I remember myself at that time - very eager to learn and almost no attitude.

The family owns a Mercedes SUV. I had to parallel park that black monstrosity TWICE. I felt like I was in Drivers ED again, as the kid's dad was with us and coaching me on which way to turn the wheel. Gah - I didn't tell him, but I'm looking for parking lots from now on. I don't care if the kids and I have to walk 4 blocks. It will be done. I should have said "Oh, the car doesn't park itself"?

But then I thought - maybe I should save those jokes for later in the summer :)

Kate: We're enjoying your refelections. You communicate very well, with words like poetry, pictures like dreams. Four years of college have made you deep and thoughtful. It's one thing to muse about life's vicissitudes, but another to make others feel what you're feeling. That takes an artist.
