Two ordinary pieces of rope. One lazy summer afternoon. Two kids who were bored. This is what I had to go on.
"Jump rope!" I yelled. The kids then tried to jump as many times as they could without having the rope tangle up in their feet.
As they did this, I told them about the Kangaroo Club of Starry Elementary School, the game of cat and mouse during PE class and double dutch with my sister on summer afternoons.
Although this diversion kept them busy for only a little while, they finally experienced fun away from TV, video games or computer. Jumping, yelling, sweating, laughing, loving.

Man, that double Dutch. I'm amazed it didn't leave the two of you with some permanent injury. Disney has a movie about the sport--"Jump In."
Good memories to pull on. Make sure you share them with Em.
I think Coolidge School in Cedar Rapids still has a jump rope drill team.
you're going to be a great mama someday :)
