Thunderstorm Runner

It's 6am.

Cloudy and gray.

Suddenly, the rain starts. Very slight at first, then harder.

Where am I? Out running a 12 K, of course.

Oddly enough, I find running in the rain the most comforting and relaxing. I've heard that many people meditate while running. I can believe it. There's something about the connect to the breath and movement that's unlike any other experience you could have. Check out this link for some info on the zen of running: http://zenhabits.net/2007/08/the-zen-of-running-and-10-ways-to-make-it-work-for-you/

Lightening storms are a different matter. Arkansas is entering into summer, which means lots of rain! Luckily, the thunder in thunderstorms doesn't bother me. In fact I usually pretend the noise is another runner gaining on me in a race and it makes me run harder and faster. I don't mess with lightening though-I wouldn't advise it to anyone.

So for those of you who aren't too keen on running in the rain...give it a try. You think a runner's high is great? Try running hard and fast while moist and cool summer rain falls all around you and deep, rich aromas fill your nostrils. It's a little slice of heaven!
