Summer Road Races

There are many things that hail the first days of summer.
Stawberries. Fireflies. Picnics. Summer rain.

To me, however, it's the road races. The 5 and 8 K runs that go on, throughout the country, where people come together to take part in exercise, good health, and the awesome fruit at the finish line.

This Saturday I participated in the FireCracker 5K in Springdale AR.
This run was sponsored by the Northwest Chapter of The Arkansas Society of
Professional Engineers. All proceeds are directed toward scholarships for Arkansas engineering and math students. Besides doing one of my favorite things (ie running), I donated my $20 fee to a scholarship fund. A total win win.

I love the camaraderie that is present at road races. People of all shapes, sizes and athletic abilities come to donate their time and money to a good cause. Friends are made, hands are shook and there is an indescribable sense of excitement in the air.

Towards the end of the Firecracker 5K, the finish line was in sight. I had passed numerous groups of people and saw that I was going to be two minutes faster than my expected time. All of a sudden, a green blur pushed past me and finished a second before I did.

I didn't have the steam left in me to try and push past her. My fellow runner in green did come up to me later, and thanked me for giving her a "great race". She got third in our age group - I was fourth.

A good day :)
